Fire in the Woods Blog Tour and Giveaway

I'm excited to be a part of the Fire in the Woods Blog Tour:

Here's a little bit about the book:

ABOUT FIRE IN THE WOODS:
Title: Fire in the Woods

Publication date: September 2014

Publisher: Month9Books, LLC.

Author: Jennifer M. Eaton

When a plane crashes in the woods near Jess’s home, the boy of her dreams falls out of the sky—literally. But David’s not here to find a girlfriend. He’s from another planet, and if Jess can’t help him get back to his ship, he’ll be stuck on Earth with nothing to look forward to but the pointy end of a dissection scalpel.

But her father runs their house like an army barracks, and with an alien on the loose, Major Dad isn’t too keen on the idea of Jess going anywhere. Ever. So how the heck is she supposed to help the sweetest, strangest, and cutest guy she’s ever met?

Hiding him in her room probably isn’t the best idea. Especially since her Dad is in charge of the squadron searching for David. That doesn’t mean she won’t do it. It just means she can’t get caught.

Helping David get home while protecting her heart—that’s gonna be the hard part. After all, she can’t really fall for a guy who’s not exactly from here.

As they race through the woods with Major Dad and most of the U.S. military one breath behind them, Jess and David grow closer than either of them anticipated. But all is not what it seems. David has a genocide-sized secret, and one betrayal later, they are both in handcuffs as alien warships are positioning themselves around the globe. Time is ticking down to Armageddon, and Jess must think fast if she’s to save the boy she cares about without sacrificing Earth—and everyone on it.

My YA Books Central review:

Cute alien. Action. Suspense. Romance. Sign me up!

What worked: I really enjoyed the alien backdrop with hints of Roswell the TV series meets ET. Only in this case the alien just happens to be sizzling hot. Not only model hot looking but his body temperature is higher than ours too.

The action starts right off in the first chapter and continues throughout. The town is in lock down and wants David, the alien, who is disguised in his adaptation of human skin. Jess stumbles on him while trying to take a photo that will help with her college applications. Right off the bat she’s attracted to this stranger, even when there seems to be something ‘off’ with him. There’s a few scenes on how far Jess goes to help David which involves hiding him from her very protective father and prying eyes of her BFF Maggie. Later, Jess and David go off on a high speed adventure and nothing holds them back. Not the military, the cold(David can’t handle), other aliens, and Jess’s military father. Plus a whole reveal that makes Jess question everything including David.

One huge kuddo has to go for the diversity in this storyline. Jess Martinez is Latina but it doesn’t come out and say that. Her backstory is woven in effortlessly which I really liked. She’s one tough heroine that goes after what she wants. I liked her determination, spunk, and willingness to take chances.

The father/daughter relationship is real without any of the clichés I hate. Jess’s dad is tough but loves her. You can tell that by his actions and their interaction.

What I did have a hard time with: Hands down it had to be the chemistry or lack of between David and Jess. Okay, I get this was his first time on Earth and he takes on the skin and the appearance of what Jess considers a hottie. She’s attracted to him and does everything she can to help him even when her father and Maggie tell her otherwise. Still, I wanted more emotion. More chemistry. There is a ‘first’ kissing scene that felt more innocent than exciting. I guess I wanted a more intense connection between the two. Jess and David’s relationship felt innocent and almost too safe. David is very protective of Jess but not to the point of being a stalker. I’m hoping the chemistry will go up a nock or two in the next book in the series.

This is a fast paced story that at times almost went too fast for me. The explanations of our world and even human relationships felt a bit more like ET than Roswell. Plus, I wanted to know more exactly on what the aliens planned to do with finding another world. I felt the explanation went by too fast.

Even after saying that, there is a lot of potential in this series. There’s a hot alien and a spunky heroine that goes after her heart even if in this case it’s an alien. For readers that love a good alien romance tale, this one will fit the bill. Plus, as an added bonus there is a sneak preview of the second book in the series.
