Friday Five

1. Teen's been sick this week. So I've been to the doctor's office, plus finding out one med for his inflammation of the lungs wasn't covered by our insurance. We have pretty good insurance, so this surprised me.

The cost? $300.

My reaction:

Up date: After waiting two days, doctor was able to chose another inhaler at a more reasonable price.

$20.

2. Been working on romance. Took a scene to my weekly critique group. Was told that my voice still feels YAish. My protagonist sounds more like an 18 year old and not a 22 year old.

Need to read more New Adult/Chick Lit books. Have less snark.

So guess what I've been reading?

3. AFTER YOU by Jojo Moyes

I have to admit I didn't like the first book ME BEFORE YOU. Why? Because I felt that the love interest was so selfish when he still decided to go through with assisted suicide even after he falls in love with Louisa.

Then I read the second book and totally loved the voice and the journey of Louisa after Will's death. Louisa is quirky and very likable. Her adventures lead her to meet a hot London paramedic and a 16 year old who claims that Will was her father. I fell in love with the writing and had to get the recent release...

4. STILL ME

Louisa accepts a job in New York as an assistant to an immigrant wife of a wealthy man. Once again the humor, adventures of Louisa are so engaging. I can't help but wish Louisa will find another love of her life.

5. Then I finished reading another YA Sci-fi: NEMESIS by Brendan Reichs

The first chapters had me on the edge of my seat. Every other year, a teen is killed on her birthday. But she wakes up and finds herself in the same place. Only she's not hurt. Then she finds out that another classmate has the same experiences. Add the threat of an asteroid destroying the Earth.

This story had me until the reveal which felt anticlimactic.  I was disappointed, but that's just me.

**Guilty Pleasure:

Getting ready to go to tomorrow's OCCRWA meeting. I'm excited that Barbara De Marco-Barrett will be speaking. I took a couple writing classes from her from UCI Extension. It'll be nice to see and hear from her again!

Next Meeting: Saturday, March 10, 2018

Barbara De Marco-Barrett

Learn from Barbara DeMarco-Barrett, author of Pen on Fire: A Busy Woman’s Guide to Igniting the Writer Within (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2004; 11th printing) a Los Angeles Times bestseller and winner of the 2005 American Society of Journalists and Authors book award.

Plus, OCCRWA is GREAT for motivating, inspiring me with writing this romance. Something that was lacking from SCBWI.
