Cybils' Five-12/1/17

For the rest of this year I plan to report the 5 or more nominated Cybils' books I've read for the week.  I will share trends I'm seeing too.

Here we go!

1. Okay, I'm totally seeing a trend for this year in YA fiction. One has to be the theme of adoption.

Maybe it's based on the fab TV series THIS IS US.

But there's always been the topic of teen pregnancy. We adopted our son when he was 2 days old. His birthmother was 14 years old. His birth father was 16 and on the high school football team.

So, I have personal experience with this theme from the adoptive parent's point of view. Also part of our training to adopt involved many in services, attending birthmother panels(most were teens), and other things to help us with adoption.

One thing I have to say is this crop of books that deals with adoption are freakin' amazing.

Read this one this week and LOVED IT SOMETHING FIERCE:

A novel filled with hope, pain, sadness, and love. Coming of age tale that shows the power of love and how the definition of family is so much more than biology. Totally recommend.

**Totally LOVED this book.  It's one of those rare books you hug after you finish. Maybe it spoke to me as I have an adopted son who is 16 and a half. He's been asking about his biological father too. This book is so authentic and real.

2.  FAR FROM THE TREE by Robin Benway

YA meets THIS IS US. Really enjoyed this story of three biological siblings that meet up sixteen years later and the struggles they have along the way. Not sugar coated either. Adoption, foster care, and other issues addressed in a realistic way.

3. YOU DON'T KNOW ME BUT I KNOW YOU by Rebecca Barrow
This one is about a teen who just happens to be adopted and what she ends up doing when she finds out she's pregnant. Kuddos for the frank honesty of this novel that shows the choices a pregnant teen has without being judgmental.

4.   90 DAYS OF DIFFERENT by Eric Walters

This is a fun tale of a teen who thrives on schedules, routines and the BFF that gives her the challenge to think outside of the box. During the summer she does 90 things that are outrageous at times and funny. A fast-paced fun read.

5.  ONE OF US IS LYING by Karen M. McManias

Think Breakfast Club meets Pretty Little Liars.

Listening to this on audible books and I've been hooked from the very start on who killed Simon, the school gossip who just happens to post the worse of the student body.
